Dumbest thing anyone’s said to you regarding fish…Go!

Someone I know wanted to place a goldfish in a old whiskey barrel I have full of water and floating lilies. He believed the fish would survive in stagnant, non-filtered water.

You don't actually need a filter if you have enough plants.

The barrel contains ammonia and is completely stagnant. It just has the one lily in there. I wouldn't personally put any living thing in there.

Oh if there's only 1 lily then yeah definitely don't. Still, stagnant water doesn't necessarily mean bad for fish, just means that plants are the only other way of oxygenating the water.

Carp ( goldfish ) live in really bad water, and don't care.

I kept goldfish outside in an old galvanized stock tank during the summer. It was bigger than a barrel, of course, but no plants, no filtration. Some of them lived over twenty years.
