i am switching some of my femal communities which are all in 10 gals to 20longs today. i go to feed this morning and discover that one of my plakats has dropsy! :(
well upon a close inspection last night, she was normal so it has just developed today. the funny thing is that she is acting normal and is as fiesty as she always is. think theres hope for her? shes not too pineconed yet but sadly i doubt she willl stay that way.
the pics arent as bad as they look becauise she is part giant anyways so she is naturally thick. anyone have any suggestions? of course i am going to put her in her own tank but im debating which medicine to use. colloidal silver definately but i am pondering methylene blue as well.
pardon the massive algae invasion in the pics. new plants are going into the new tanks.

Having recently had two cases of this,
I'm sorry to say that I had to euthinise them. :-(
That was the hardest thing I've had to do since
starting this hobby.
These fish may respond well to injections of antibiotics.
However if a fish does have fully developed Dropsy
then survival is unlikely.

I've had several cases of dropsy, and the only time I was able to save the fish was when it was my platy. I treated the entire tank with Maracyn Two, and by the end of the treatment cycle he looked normal. So I would definitely suggest it. Good luck, she's beautiful.

well i added maracyn 2 to the tank. shes is looking more pineconey than earlier :( and is not as spunky...although it may be the smaller tank i moved her to.

i hope she makes it

day 2.
i just got back from work and added the second does of m2. she isnt looking any better but she isnt looking any worse either.
if you can, please pray for her. :)

thanks

Sorry to hear you're having a rough go at it Jac. I'm crossing my fingers for her to pull through. Good luck and I hope everything turns out alright.

I agree that Macaryn II is your best option, it's pretty hardcore stuff, but I've heard people have had luck with dropsy. -_-

day 4
i am doing double doses of m2. she is still alive but not looking any better.
still praying for her though

A very experienced breeder gave me the amount of epsom salts to soak the betta in. Instead of doing one harsh soaking, which is very hard on the betta, He soaks in 1 tsp. of epsom salts in a beanie until the swelling goes down.
