Just got a piece of driftwood yesterday and I know I have to soak it to get it waterlogged.

It's a big piece so a fifth of it or so is sticking out of the bucket. How do I know when it's ready for the tank? Plus is it supposed to make the water brownish (tannins)? Because right now it only turns brown when I scrub it.

What i did-
Boiled it for an hour > Let it soak for another 2 days in warm water, > Then added to my tank.
It still does discolour the water a bit, but only slightly. After a few months it will almost stop and become un-noticable, as the water changes keeps the water still clear.

give it a couple of weeks.when you put it in the tank and it sinks..it's ready.
my driftwood never leaked tannins.

I don't have a pot big enough to boil it so can I just soak it for a few days?

I don't know if this is supposed to happen but when I scratch the wood with my nail, bits come off...

You will break down the fibers if you boil it, causing the wood to rot in your tank. So I would recomended against boiling, but yea soak it, if you are gettiing bits comming off put it under running water and that should get the worst of the debris off it

Yeah I was a bit confused about the tannins cause I thought driftwood doesn't leak tannins.

I scrubbed the wood a bit cause I realised stuff came out when I scratched it. Seems better after scrubbing though.

Will soaking for 3 days be okay? Or should I just see if it sinks or not and then go with the flow haha

Well if it does not sink you could try finding a bit of slate or other rock to weigh it down untill it becomes properly waterlogged

Oh, and also, if you can't get it to sink, put a rock on each end to hold it down, so it becomes completely waterlogged .
