I let a piece of driftwood sit in my tank for over a day and a half and it's still floating at the top. How long is it going to take for it to get water logged? Although my fish do rather like it floating at the top. But seriously how long will it take?

Depends on the type of wood really. Some sinks immediately, some never does. A good trick I've used is to soak the wood in water for a few days in a bucket. Every day remove the water and refill using boiling water. The heat makes the wood soft and allows the water to soak into it easier.

I have a piece that's been soaking in my tank for months. I recently unscrewed the slate to see if it would sink on it's own. It didn't.

dude some peices of timber never sink. wood like teak and other things will never sink thats why they built boats out of them. if you found the wood in the ocean (drift wood) chances are then it may never sink. so i suggest maybe "biting the bullet" and buying some timber from an aqaurium, however even buying timber from a fish shop may require you to soak it with some rocks on it for at least a week or two...this will also assure that no whack colours (tanins) soak out of the wood into the fish tank making it look like tea.

best of luck with the wood sinking.

peace.

Try boiling it and letting it simmer for a few hours if its small enough or if you have a pot big enough that it will fit into.

Any seasoning required?

i got a piece of driftwood a while back and i just buried the plate on it under some gravel and it has stayed ever since

I got some pine driftwood from a local lake for my tank back home, and it took almost a year before it would stay at the bottom of the tank all by itself...

Allright, so even the my syno's really enjoy their playground of drifting driftwood, what kind of screws should i use to attach it to slate? Just wood screws?

Keep going every one....I have lots of floaty bits of wood I was looking for an answer to aswell :)

So do we screw slate to it with normal screws?

Stupid question maybe. Do you need a specialist drill bit to drill slate ? I thought most rocks required water under the drill bit and a diamond cutter ?

I've drilled holes in my wood and used nylon cable ties to cable tie the wood to the rock. It works fine. I can't see this wood every sinking on it's own. It's a largish piece of Mopani.

you could drill a thin piece of slate with a normal wood drill it's not that hard i'f it like 10mm or thicker i'd use a masonary drill bit don't press too hard or it will crack!
