Mine was absolutely fine. No fuzz or grossness. It just took about 2 weeks to sink. It's a lovely dark colour now & really nice addition to the tank.

If you have two 5 gallon buckets, use another one on top to sink it, it will waterlog much quicker! You need to submerge the whole deal and not have it floating. The only other way I know is boiling it would help a lot, but that does not seem possible with the large wood.
