I am upgrading my 30g tall tank to a 60g long for Christmas, and I have been collecting some driftwood for it, and this may be a silly question, but I was just wondering how everyone keeps their driftwood in their tanks from floating? Just hoping I can learn some new ideas for the new tank

For the new piece I had I soaked it for a week in a container and weighted it down to allow it to become water logged, this also gives tannins a chance to leach out. It would be advisable to pour boiling water over it as well to kill of anything unwanted. Hope this helps, there are a few guides on here that will help you asnwell if you have a little search.

I'll add that if after a good soak, you may still need to weigh it down with a stone in the display for some time.

+1 For all of these

Depending on the size, you can boil the actual wood in a pan for a couple of hours and this tends to help.

Failing that, place a stone on top of it for a few weeks/month (s) until its stays submerged.

With mine, I gave an effort soaking then gave up and tied it to some rocks to keep it down... been in there over a month (not a huge piece either) and it STILL floats if I take the rocks off. LOL

Thanks guys. For the big piece I will just have to weigh it down as it is far too big to soak in a container. Seems pretty silly but I never thought about the fact that after some time, the wood will stay submerged on its own :X Now I feel silly screwing mine to a piece of plastic, it's such a pain, I can't move it around or take it out or anything. Its stuck in the tank for life lol

I always just look for the denser pieces. If it's dry and it seems about as dense as cork bark, skip it. Hardwood leaches more tannins, but they sink faster.

I have a very big piece in my tank, like 60cm long, and I only poured boiling water on it a few times and then threw it in, and it sunk immediately. When I had some smaller pieces, I soaked them for about 6 weeks beforehand.

yea, the piece I found for it is pretty significant, and will be easy to weigh down with a couple rocks until it has soaked for long enough. thanks for the help guys :)
