Dreadful Tank For Sale At Tesco

PFK are reporting that Tesco are to remove the item from sale, but at this time it is still available on their site :(

Well, I sent off my e-mail too.

Cheers,

Dear Sir/Madam,

Re: http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.100-2596.aspx

As a regular Tesco shopper it was with regret that I saw a small "aquarium" designed around an office theme. While certainly cute, it is completely unsuitable for keeping live fish in.

The aquarium lacks a heater and has no space for one, and one would have to assume that a heater would melt the plastic ornaments. Likewise, there is no filter, which all tropical fishes required. So the information on the web site that guppies and tetras could be kept is very misleading (and possibly even a breach of the Trade Descriptions Act of 1968). Rinsing off and refilling aquaria, as stated on the advertisement, will lead to the death of fish because of the chlorine added to tap water supplies.

Goldfish, which grow to around 30 cm, cannot possibly be kept in that aquarium by sheer size alone. There is no such thing as a "small goldfish" as the item description suggests; only baby goldfish a few months from growing up and becoming big goldfish.

It is a shame that Tesco feels the need to sell products that can only lead to animal cruelty. For a store with a reputation for helping schools and getting involved in other good works, this is all the more disappointing. I hope that you will reconsider the sale of this item, and perhaps consult with veterinarians and other experts in the animal welfare field before stocking items such as these.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Neale Monks

This topic has made me laugh.. Do people not think that this is being taken far too seriously? :/

It's not funny for the fish that have to live in that torture chamber.

Possibly

I started this thread to try and get a few like minded people to try and change something I thought was wrong.

I assumed that this being a fish forum it would gain support form the majority of members who I'd assume wouldn't condone keeping tetra's & guppies in an unheated, unfiltered 4 litre tank which is regularly rinsed in tapwater  (in the UK, before those from more tropical climes start about keeping their betta's in them)

It, like most other topics on TFF became "serious" when the opinionated cantankerous pondlife gets involved in making it a "discussion" about wholly irrelevant side issues.

For the record PFK have suggested that we keep up the pressure as it is only being withdrawn form sale to review the advert, with extra pressure, maybe they will stop selling it permanently.

Possibly something along the lines of "I am gald to see that Tesco have withdrawn this from sale and I would hope that as a responsible ratailer, they will never put it back on sale." I'm sure someone can write one better than me though.

'Perfect for the workaholic fish'. That tank is on sale in mulitple retailers, perhaps email the manufacturers?

...perhaps email the manufacturers?

This is better because the tank is for sale at lots of outlets... just Froggle it! I think e-mailing the manufacturers is better... but I doubt they would listen!

Its being withdrawn? so its still on sale at the moment? Was planning on going down to Tesco in the morning to buy one.... No not for Tetras or Guppies they are all safely in the 56G and staying there, but it looked kinda a funky and the little'n wants a little tank for some pink Apple Snails.

I can understand the point which was originally raised and why it was and its good you got some good feedback from concerning parties.. but it did kinda of get a little too serious just for something on sale at Tesco -_- Sainsburys are selling a slightly bigger tank though but its still similar to that.

Is that not like complaining to the makers of a baseball bat that it has been used to beat somebody up, instead of the person who says, "this here baseball ball is great for smashing people's knees in"?

The problem here is that Tesco's are advocating it is used to a purpose it is not fit for and more than that, that the use would end up in causing animal cruelty.
