I have a little Dragon Goby is only 4in, I was wondering if its ok to keep it in a tank with small gravel, its small enough to go in its mouth, but i read that sand is best, Do u think it wil be alright cuz i am broke right now, or do i need to save up and get some sand?

I should have done research before buying it. I have 6 tiger barbs, 4 giant danios and 1 rainbow shark. I don't think those fish are supposed to be in brackish water. The guy at pestmart just said put some aquarium salt in the tank. I have had him for a month and it seems to be doing fine.

No large chain store will ever give you anything near correct information when it comes to fish.

Walmart, petco, petsmart - they're all out to make money, not care about the wellbeing of the fish they sell. That alone is enough reason not to shop at them, but also ... It's very rare to get anyone who knows anything about proper care for fish.

The aquarium salt that you speak of is a "tonic salt".... they tried to tell me the same thing. If your going to create brackish water your going to need sea salt like instant ocean. And yea i dont believe the rest of your fish are brackish. I would complain to the manager that you were given mis information and take it back asap.

Dragon gobies can live in freshwater, as long as the water quality is spot on. :good:

My mom made the mistake of buying one a while back.

It lasted a real long time in a 30 gal freshwater tank:

- 3 days -

I have kept dragon gobies in both.

I first kept it in brackish after doing my initial research, but he never ate properly and wasn't doing well at all.

So moved him to a FW tank and he thrived, ate very well and grew fast after that.

I keep them in stock at work too. In freshwater, feeding fine and have 2 left which have been in for 3 months now.

I had mine for 3 years before moving onto bigger fish and selling him.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I was searching for info on Dragon Gobies, and found this thread. I hope to get a Dragon Goby fairly soon, I was going to keep it in brackish water, but since they can be kept in freshwater apparantly? I will attempt to keep it in my 4ft freshwater tank.

sand is good yest but it also has its cons it is very very hard to keep clean, I chose a fine black gravel when I got rid of the sand which seems to be fine aswell for my dragon goby.
