Blady hell did it pick its time, my air pump in my big tank yesterday broke, stopped pumping air and i started panicking, so i had to take it apart quickly to find that the nozel had broken, very carefully glue is back on and seal it, and then put it together, and then relized, that even after all that, the pump couldnt pump the air into the large tank because of the pressure, so i quickly ran to my other tank, took the air pump that is used for my CAE and put that one on the big tank and put the other one on that tank, and even then it still wouldnt pump air into the tank, so i raised it enough of the floor to finally get a small amount of air pumped out to keep the CAE alive for the night... Thankfully, if i had known this sooner, my dad has a BIG air pump in his garage, not used for fish but other purposes, but he is giving it to me, and i checked it out, and BOY does it pump the air out, i come run something like thirty airs stones with that thing, lucky me, because i would die if i had to keep buying air pumps, this is my forth one so far, blinking plastic things!

Oh well, have you guys ever got annoyed at things like this?

Unless you have an air operated filter, air pumps are quite unnecessary. The surface agitation created by your filter will provide enough gas exchange.

Its my aglea eaters and pleco that i worry about, i would have been fine with the others, but they need some sort of oxygen, and just so you know, i would be lucky, i need a bigger filter as it is, because this one i have is too small for the tank and so has to be pre-set half way into the tank, so it can filter most of the water, but i am going to get a new one along with my new tank if i can get it..

;)

I got some pics of that air pump i was talking about.. the grey box!!

But i tried it out and it was far too powerful for even four air outlets! The fish were struggling to swim so i had to revert back, but i have something sorted for them, so oh well

;)

Even a small amount of surface agitation will provide sufficient gas exchange. You do not need an air pump.

But as i said before, my filter is too small to agitate the surface so that is out of the window, i have planned out my tank to maximise heat, oxygenation and filtration, all three put together does a fantastic job and i could never ask for anything less for my fish, so basically i swapped that filter for my brothers, who pump is more powerful than mine and does the job charmingly...
