Red gills is a sign of ammonia problems...If the ammonia gets too high, it can burn their gills! Not sure what the blackish shadow in his stomach area would have been. Sounds like you tried everything you could though!

Thanks for the tip about the red gills. He was in a tank with loads of other fish..cant remember what..but his gills had been red all the while I had him.
