Well I did an experiment where at the start of the summer I put a few dozen juvi chery shrimp into a large(20ish gal)tub outside.I purchased some elodia crispa off someone on ebay to plant it with.Well it has turned out to be a partial success. The shrimp have grown and bred. BUT it turns out that the pond weed I purchased was full of newt eggs  The other day when glancing in I spotted a little newt eft (or tadpole whatever). Today I did a proper check and there were tons of them  I did see several adult cherry shrimp but I guess all the shrimplets would have been newt food  Anyway im gonna catch them all out and take them to my local quarry where theres a thriving newt population. I'll take some pics of the little guys before I relese them.

Interesting ~T~

That's a big shrimp tub :hyper: . How high is it? Were you trying to breed the cherries for food or for sale?

Dunno how high probably about 15". I was just seeing how many I could grow outside, I dont use them as food but would maybe have sold some depending on how many I got. I netted out all the newts and at a rough count theres about 50. I'll relese them later when I go fishing. I took a few pics too.

what specie of newt were they :)

i have a population of great crested at the top of my garden which i cant touch/move/damageby law :(

Awesome!! :D

why the ":(" though? -_-

Maybe that section of the garden is falling into disrepair for it. A few years back my neighbor complained all year long when an endangered woodpecker nested in an eyesore dead tree and the Department of Natural Resources would let him trim it, let alone cut it down.

I would have kept the newts. I have kept cherry shrimp outside for over a year now, their tub was frozen over a few times in the winter but they do fine they just dont grow or eat when its very cold, they just have plants as filter and sometimes I feed them in the summer. I have taken a few bags of them to the LFS. Lots of leaves fall into the tub, they like cherry leaf most it seems.
Newts are cool little critters to have in the garden.

Nooooooooooooooooo

Send them to me, i want newts in the garden and some for the ponds.

Really...hmmm I might leave some in over winter and see what happens.

Heres some pics of the newts, no idea what kind they are. I know my local place(where I released them) has probably the common kind (smooth?). The pond weed came from England so maybe they might be another kind.

WHY ARE THEY SO CUTE GAAAAAAH

I would find out if they're a native species before you go releasing them.

PS: Does one of them have two heads?

I agree. I wouldn't release them until I knew they were native. Do want to mess with the native ones.

great crested newts are critically endangerd the fact i have a breeding population in my garden means i cant do a thing, as its a criminal offence to damage an endangered animals environment or the specie in question.

After all, i could be the species last hope :p

post some pics when there adults T
then i'l specie them for you.

They were set free in the quarry, as far as I can tell they are the same species as the newts that already live there.
