Hey everyone

Pretty much what the title says...

I had 3 buckets of filthy fish water I cleaned out with the gravel vac yesterday - it was sitting in the laundry waiting for my mum to use on her gardens.

Our german shepherd (usually an outside dog) was in visiting, and yes, I heard lapping coming from the laundry and I sprung her drinking from one of the buckets. Poor thing, I think I scared her when I yelled at her to not drink it,.

Most of the crud was settled on the bottom of the bucket, but still....I'm a bit worried it could make her sick! Will she be ok? Is she likely to get the runs/vomits?

Dare I ask if anyone's drank grotty fish water before and been fine?

Cheers

my 2 dogs are always trying to do that for some reason, and they usually succeed, never hurt mine in anyway, and no i never tried myself :)

i've had our german sheperd drink worse than fish tank water one day! I was washing the car and the chemicals were lying in a puddle near the drain...she drank away at them while i was rinsing the car (without me knowing obviously). didn't do her any harm with car wash chemicals from the drums.

Just keep an eye on her eating and give her plenty of water

nah should be fine, my cats do it all the time, they love fishtank water for some reason!

Our cats (and Probably most dogs and cats) love to drink out of all but the water left out for them. You should see some of the places I find our 2 cats. There will be no problem so long as it isnt a constant thing or it doesn't get into an open wound.

my dad was once starting a siphon with his mouth and he drank some of the fish tank water. He almost threw up  my cats have never drank from anything but the water they are given.lol

i didn't realise there were people who hadn't accidentally got a mouthfull of fishy water that way! lol

it's worst from the SW tank

lol i had that problem to...good old gulp of fish tank water! But python just arrived so no more of that...got tired of carrying buckets of water from one side of house to the other :D

Our lab drinks fish water all the time. I try to keep her out but keeping a lab from water is like keeping flies off the dog's poo. As was mentioned by another poster, she has had much worse to drink and it's never hurt her before. Makes you want to go out and buy a dog water filter doesnt it!!

The water won't hurt her as long as it doesn't have any fish medicines in it.

There shouldn't be....I never ran carbon after my last treatment for whitespot a few weeks ago, but I would say I've done enough water changes since then for it all to be gone...

She's been inside with me all evening, its been about 4/5 hours and she's been fine, so I don't think it was anything to worry about. :good:

Made for some interesting replies nonetheless!

My friend was buying fish tanks from some guy, and we were siphoning water from one of the tanks, and I got a mouthfull of water. He said he didnt clean his tank in 6 months. He just left them sitting around. I was scared I was going to get sick and I asked him for a drink of water and the guy was like "just drink a beer you'll be fine". So he gave me a beer and I didnt get sick :p

Im sure your dog will be fine, my cats drink everything BUT from there water bowl - even drink form the TOILET! I thought only dogs in films did that lol!

Have you seen what dogs drink (and eat) outside?.
:shout:
no kidding. mine will walk past a clean bowl of water to sneak a drink out of my daphnia cultures

last year she got a case of hookworms. The vet said it was very uncommon and had no idea where she could have picked them up. But I suspected that I knew, so,yeah, discourage it if at all possible.
