Hello,

I got a pair of Kribs for my community tank a few weeks ago but sadly the male died of unknown causes within a few days. I did not get them for breeding, I just thought it would be nice to ave a pair.

Now then, my female Krib seems happy enough and is very colourful. However, I am not experienced with Kribs and I am not sure whether she would be happier with a male as well or if it does not matter.

Any help appreciated.

P.S. I put that bit in bold because whenever I ask about Kribs all anyone seems to go on about is how to breed them, no matter how many times I say I do not want them for active breeding purposes!!

Mine always seemed happiest with a mate, but this is just in my experience. I didn't get them for breeding either, I just figured that I am happy with a mate, so they would be too. Mine never bred in the tank, I think since there were so many other fish that they were too "stressed" to build a family. Having said that, they didn't seem stressed, but they were a little protective of their pot that they called home. They definitely enjoyed playing "house". Hope this helps....................

I think your krib would be happier and more active with another krib as company. That being said I do not think that it would matter if that other krib is a female or male.

Ohh

I never thought of that, for an unknown reason I assumed they would fight.

??

Even though you might not have an interest in breeding the fish, the breeding behavior of cichlids can be a rewarding experience in itself. In addition you will never see the colors of these fish as brillient as in their breeding dress. I highly recommend trying to achieve a bonded pair for your tank for these reasons ;)

I got a male today. I went to my lfs for essentials and saw that they had Kribs (they have never had them before) and I got a male. He's gorgeous! I just hope he gets on with Mrs K.

They seem ok so fay. I know what you mean about breeding being rewarding tca but it would break my heart to see fry being eaten by my other fish.
