What makes a fish a cichlid? It's a question that's been burning in my head for a while now...what are the traits that classes a fish as a cichlid? it just seems like a very random and very large family of fish, and I'd like to know what similarity they all share XD. Sorry if this question seems a little ridiculous..

I think its down to dna....but i think its obvious.

They (old world and new world) all tend to have those big interested eyes...the spiny spikes on the top and all tend to have a certain behavior very different to other freshwater fish....in alot of ways very similar to Marine Damsel fish.

Alot of my friends who are new to fish keeping get Gouramis mixed up with cichlids because they have similar traits...but lack the cichlid personality and behavior...even in if territorial.

I love cichlids for the simple fact no other freshwater species have the same kind of behavior....all other fish seem brain dead to me and don't compel me to stare at them for hours.
