Paul glad to see you here Already found the turtle people eh?Aquatic turtles need 10G for every inch, so one 12" turtle would need a 120G, or two 12" turtles would need 240G and so on. Always bear in mind the adult size, they usually grow quick. Along with a big enough tank, you will need a heater, filter rated for a tank 3x the size (because turtles produce far more waste) and also a basking lamp and UVB reptile bulb. It is not a cheap thing.

Why is it much better?i would buy one much! better
As a matter of fact I'd say it is much worse. Most pet shops or fish stores keep turtles in very poor conditions, sell them at illegal sizes, and give no information on their care or the wrong information. It is quite likely you but a turtle and end up having it die or you take it to the vet and have to spend lots of money having it cured, etc.
Usually these adoption places want what is best for the turtle and will give your turtle the best care possible. And you can be pretty much guaranteed that they will be disease free because they are taken to the vet and adoption places do not adopt out a sick turtle (not without letting you know first).
So overall, adopting is the better option, free turtle, healthy turtle, happy turtle.
