Hi folks, I want to upgrade my filtering so I can remove my fluval 4 plus I was going to replace it with another external filter

maybe something like this filter in the link

link to ebay filter

But its around the same capacity as the fluval 4, but my reckoning is that as its an external filter it would do a better job. It would be coupled with my tetra tec 1200.

or would I be better getting a slightly larger filter only thing is budget is a problem at the moment.

any suggestions?

cheers chish

Can't comment on that filter, but its sometimes worrying to go with a "no brand" filter. Especially an external. You'd want to know the seals are going to be safe and you're not going to get flooded.

If you shop around on ebay, I think you could have an EX1200 for around £70. I've seen one advertised at about £62 + shipping (don't remember what the shipping was).

i think DevUK has about covered it. it may well be that these filters are fantastic. but do you really want to find they are not, only when your fish start to die or find you are a filter short when a bit breaks and you cant find where to replace it?

apart form the filter mentioned above, the hydor-prime 10,20,30 are cheap, and from my experience, effective and efficient filters. they are a bit fragile in some places. but spares are easy to get and also cheap.

My opinion on externals is if you are going to get one, make it a good one.

I have only ever gone for Eheims, mainly because of their reputation with fishkeepers over the years and they have never failed to deliver time and time again. Even my older style cannister filter is still going strong.

Save your money and buy bigger and better further down the line...

typical me I thought that filter was an eheim, until I read the replies and looked a little closer lol. Looks like one though, now wonder it was so cheap!!.

But yeah an eheim or tetra tec then would be good for my tank, its just I dont think my fluval 4 is up to the job (although it syas it does over 1000 lph I dont think it does anywhere near that), I already have a tetratec 1200 so I think I might get another one.

there seems little point in changing the make of your second filter, if the current filter has proved, reliable and effective in the past. Eheim are about the best filter out there. truth is the only thing they really do best, is last for years. bits are also frighteningly expensive, if you need them. i have yet to see a tank that is unhealthy, simply because it has a Hydor or Teratac filter, and not an Eheim. i do come across lots of unhealthy tanks filtered by Eheim, and others. the difference is the Keeper, not the kind of filter he buys..

It may well do close to 1000lph but it doesnt have anywhere near the capacity for filter media that a lot of externals do.

I agree with boboboy that other filters work just as well technically, but I like my filters to last if I am spending good money on them, and Eheims always have for me.
