I've heard those are really tough on plants. True?

yes, true. the anubias and pothos are surviving in her tank but they are nibbled. Heavily. I lost mine at home in the great neon tetra disease disaster and I have not replaced her. So my plants at home are healthier

It's a shame. I've always wanted to keep this species, but I love planted tanks. Same problem with tinfoil barbs.

I can vouch that the Tin Foils are hard on even the most durable of plants… I also have a large “kisser” in the tank, Tin Foils are worse… they don’t seem to like them, but must get bored, and start chewing on the Marimo balls, which are almost like steel wool…

I have Blue (three spot) gouramis the Hygrophila in the tank is heavily nibbled as well.. not sure if it’s the gouramis or the other fish though.
