I'm curious to see what everyone is doing. If you filter, please tell us the size of your fry or growout and the type of filter you use.

I don't advise others do as I do, but currently I've chosen not to filter the fry or growout tank. This is mainly due to the fact that all of my spawns have been small. I prefer large WC daily.

I personally think it would be better not to use a filter. I seem to have healthier fry without it and doing regular clean ups on the barebottom fry tanks. But thats just my 2 cents.

I don't add a filter until they're around a month old,and even then it's only a sponge. Until then it's just airline tubing with a couple of bubbles a second.

I have a sponge filter running since the beginning in my 10 gallon. I may have had it running a bit too high @ first, but now I have it @ approx 2-3 bubbles/second and the fry are about 2 weeks old. I had it @ approx 1 bubble/second last week.

Airstone/tube is crucial, for sure. I actually like to have these in my unfiltered adult tanks too.

I added a sponge filter in the first week but had an airstone running from the beginning.

They went into the 126 litre grow-out at around 5 weeks old as they were in a 5 gallon and were getting punky with eachother :grr: The grow-out has a fluval 3+ filter in which creates a huge current but they were fine and played in the flow quite often :fun:

Very interesting results. Looks like people deal with the filter issue in a variety of ways!

I used air sponges filters in the third week especially when I took out the father. They are very gentle air bubbling anyway and it just makes the water cycle a little bit. I just want the top level surface water get cleaner especially there is a movement. The air bubbles pops and break the top layer of the water. Anyone have seen an oily slimmy coded on the top with dust if the water didn't move? I hate that and that is why I used sponge air filter. :)

in the spawn I did I had a hang on filter with a sponge filter on the inlet. Then I put a plastic mesh in from of the outlet to asorb the outlet. I had no problems at all.....the current was such all of my spawns occured in the tank with the same setup.

i have used a sponge filter from right in the beginning before with no ill effects, last few spawns i have used a filter after the first week, doesn't really make a difference really.

i have a sponge filter or air box filter filled with gravel and filter wool, with one bubble every two seconds from the beginning and when the fry are two weeks old i turn it up a bit to circulate the water no problems....and no ammonia....... :D

edit i did vote from the beginning so one of the 6........
