Hi everyone

i just want to ask do shrimp eat guppies, live gruppies that is because i found one of my guppies dead tonight and it looked fine this morning when i checked them. it looked like it was half eaten and i haven't had this problem before i got the shrimp. i would say the shrimp is about 8 to 10cm long now. because if this is the case i might have to get rid of him since i prefer to keep my fish.

thanks in advance.

Yeah I often see shrimp in the que at my local butchers and they always buy live guppies to eat for tea.

But on a serious note, I dont think your shrimp are killing your guppies, more likley that the guppie died and the shrimp snacked on the dead body :good:

+1 although 8cm is long for a shrimp! what type is it?

Yes, indeed they do. But as has been pointed out by Livewire, they wont go hunting and killing your Guppys, they are natural scavengers, so anything that falls to the bottom of your tank is seen as an easy meal for them! :good:

Terry.

I agree with livwewire, but are you sure it is a shrimp you have? 8 - 10 cms sounds very large for a shrimp; are you sure it's not crayfish or something?

Bamboo shrimp? Mine is probably a good 2 inches at least.

he is a Macrobrachium shrimp. i have seem him attack my guppies before but didnt get them and i thought he was just scarying them away from him. but yea i just measured him and he is 7 1/2cm long. so you wouldnt think it is him? because the guppie was fine in the morning and most of the day and then i went out for about hour and half and came back to find him half eaten.

thanks for your help. anymore advise would be great. thanks

hi everyone,

i thought i would get a picture of him but cant yet but i have found a picture of someone elses and mine looks the same as the one in the picture.

A live guppy, as long as it was not a fry, would probably not become eaten. However, a dead guppy would probably be a good snack for a shrimp. Those pincers look...pinchy.

Never knew a shrimp had pinchers. They do look a bit pinchy. They may pack a pinch. (pun intended(not sure if it's a great pun though))

There was a thread a few months ago, someone had ostensibly bought 3 "algae" shrimp, they weren't sure whether they were amanos or ghost, and saw one of the shrimp attack and kill at least one fish, and then shred the fins of a cory. It turned out that one of these three was a macrobrachium.

From what little I've seen and researched on them, I would say that if it did manage to grab your guppy, it would be more than capable of killing it.

IMHO, the rule of thumb is pincers and fins DO NOT mix.

thanks the_lock_man for doing some research on this. i have put the shrimp in the breeding net and made it so it cant get out and since i have done this i have notice that my fish are fine now and all ready their tails are healing nicely. before i would see the guppies tails looking bad everyday, like something was attacking them and now there seem to be no problems.

thanks again everyone. the fish are looking happy again :D

Safest option, I feel, would be to rehome it. Then comes the question of where.........
