I have a 180 ltr tank and have a fluval 305 as my external filter. I've set the return up near the water line and it actually generates a fair amount of rippling on the surface, but not splashing (if that makes sense).

I plan on making the tank fairly heavily planted in time and I'm not sure if I need an air pump or not and was looking for some advice. I've read that I might not due to the surface water being disturbed, but as its not splashing and not creating bubbles to me my brain says its not creating oxygen ?

as long as you have some surface agitation you will be fine. you also don't want to many bubles or things like that with a planted tank, as they take out co2 which you need for plant growth. good luck with your tank.
