hi
i have always wondered if tropical fish need warm water

i no some people who have some tropical fish who dont have a heater or light

thanks

Well you should really do your research on the type of fish you are keeping.
"Average" tank temperatures for community tanks are approx 25 degrees celcius (77F).

Even if you have a warm house, you are going to have temeprature swings in your tank, so it's best to have a heater. You will need a light too unless our tank is right next to a window - which is never a great idea as you'll get loads of algae.

because im thinkin off getting a little tank ( about 20 pound) prob 6-8 gallons for maby a breeding tank or some bettas

what do you think

Betta-breeding is a very expensive and time-consuming hobby. Figure an expenditure of $300-400 minimum to get started. (Breeding tank, growout tank, individual jars for male babies, live food cultures, lots of chemicals & medications, etc.)

This site has a good breakdown of the costs and time involved:
http://www.bettatalk.com/spawning_setup.htm (She estimates $380 minimum)

As bloozoo said, tropical fish DO need heaters.

Betta breeding tanks ALSO need heaters. In order to stimulate bettas to breed, you usually raise the temp of the water to 80-82 degrees F, so you absolutely need a heater for that (and it must be a submerssible heater because the tank will only be filled about 6" deep).

Hopefully that helps ya out :)
