Don't forget that fish don't have human like eyelids and they can't just squint their eyes like we can to block out bright lights either so sudden bright lights are going to to startle them a little
 
Most fish also lose a lot of their colour in the night and darkness so maybe he just takes a while to switch it back on lol.
