i have been keeping fish a while now and i feel abit embarrsed to ask but
someone told the other day that they switch there filter off at night and just leave
there heater on is thisi the thing to do coz i leave mine on all the time

:*)
humm

Nope you should leave your filter on all the time because fish can pee and poop ammonia at any time of the day and you do not want ammonia to build up in the tank overnight or cause the beneficial bacteria that lives in your filter sponge that is capable of breaking down ammonia to die off- you should tell your freind that it is very bad for the fish to turn the filter off espcially at night when oxygen levels can be low  .

Also remember that the good bacteria in your filter require water circulation in order to survive. When you turn off the filter they will begin to starve and eventually die off. Your filter should be running 24/7.

turning off the filter for a long period of time i say 1 hour or more is a no no!

the only time mine get switched of is when doing a water change or in the middle of a lecky cut.
