Yikes. I read betta's actually jump.

What is a good thing to use to cover a fish bowl?

TIA

Oh, i've had that happen, don't worry bettas are tough fish. I suggest going to a craft store and buying a plastic mesh used for that knitting...thing, i'm not sure as to exactly what it's called. But anyway, the sheets are about 25 cents each and just somehow fasten that to the lid of your Betta's home.

Sounds good. A craft store. Never would have though of that. Right now I grabbed some plastic rap and am going to cut small holes in it as a temporary fix.

Maybe I can have somebody knit me something.

I use that for my tanks too. I have a strip on an opening on my Khuli's tank and I used to on my female crowntail but she only jumps when I feed her and none of my others have ever done anything more than poke around the surface like normal.

Well, I have mine in a tank...but luckily because mine jumps when it's feeding time! My aunt had one but it committed suicide by jumping out and landing on the floor, poor little thing (it was hours before they found him) :(

I've had 3 plakats and 2 females perform the "leap of faith". However, none of the fancy-tail bettas could make it out of the water. It's more shape than anything.

That plastic mesh stuff that Sandusky is talking about is called Plastic Canvas. My mom's a crafting freak, and it's amazing what can be made out of that stuff with a little imagination and some yarn. I've never had any jump, but then again, I'm a paranoid betta daddy and keep all my tanks and bowls covered so it can't happen.

My betta never jumped. Are those u know like vase shaped bowls and with a plant cover on top good?

I am not sure, it I got you right? A plant on top of my jar? ....

Betta vases are not what you want. Betta fish do not eat the plant, they cannot reach the surface for air because the plant is in the way, and the plant releases harmfull substances into the water. It may look pretty but the poor little Betta cannot live for more then a few weeks in the above conditions. Stay with tanks FairyAngelFish. The canvas is great for covering and dividing tanks.

Or you could buy the plant with the vase, put the plant in some other vase and let the Betta stay in the vase. I have a female in a large 1 gallon vase, not one of those plant ones you get from the store but similar in size and she's got plenty of room.

What I found out is that if you buy that renolds "press and seal" plasic wrap if great . Just poke a few holes in it. Its perfect and cheap ;)

Mine has performed jump and bite manouvres when I'm feeding him or just when my hand is within view of the surface, like if I go to take out the thermo to check the temp in water I'm about to change for... Great idea for the plastic canvas... Maybe I'll ask my mom to manufacture one with a slight rim around it to stay on. Presently I just use aluminium foil that I pierced holes in and folded down over the edges, cuz Im afraid he'll spaz and try and jump some time when I'm not around. He's a veil-tail and they are supposedly unable to make that kind of jump, especially as I always leave at least an inch at the top, but I'm much happier playing it safe than needlessly risking discovering a crispy on the floor one day. That would just break me.
