I was under the impression that different cories will school together but i read something today that said that only same types of cories will do so. so does that mean i should only have one type?

Studies have been done that show cories do recognize differences in their species, and will usually stay in groups of their own if kept with different kinds. However, this is if they have a choice and lots of space. So basically, they prefer their own kind and so I like to keep it that way (just personal opinion though), but if you want you could get away with different kinds. I'd say just try to keep them in the same size range. Ex: pgymy cories with emeralds probably isn't ideal :p

Hi Aquarius :)

I just had a situation where I could observe my corys interacting together under what was really overcrowded conditions. My bronze corys had spawned (again :hyper: ) and that made 3 of my tanks taken up with fry and most of my corys crowded together in one 10 gallon tank.

During this time they were all very active and playful. Some of the time they formed groups based on their variety and other times they just milled around together. This group was composed of a mixture of 6 different kinds of cory with ages from mature to juvenile. Of the 6 kinds, 2 were the only ones of their kind, yet they interacted with the others in a very natural way.

Now that they have been relocated and are again in normal numbers, they are still acting the same, although they seem a little bit more sedate most of the time. I was just watching a mixed group of albino C aeneus and green-golds playing together. (While the pandas are staying in the cave.)

I think that corys will be happy if they live in mixed groups, but I think that they seem to enjoy their own kind, too. Perhaps your solution is to keep pairs, with two or more pairs being better than only one pair.

But, I don't think you would be doing any harm if you mixed them up, either.

I have 12 corys from 3 different species in a 50g and as a rule they stick to their own kinds and only really mix at feeding time I think it is best to buy at least 3 of any one species of cory, the fish just seem happier for it.

thanks for all the advice. i was ready to buy some cories but neither one of my three lfs has any. i thought these were pretty common fish but i guess not here. i'll just keep an eye out for them and when i spot them, they're mine :)

Hi Aquarius :)

I have LOTS of young bronze corys. If you want to take a ride out my way, I'll gladly give you some! :D

thanks a lot for the offer Inchworm :) but it would be hard for me to get to you since I don't have a car. Besides, my dad came home today with 2 gouramis and 3 black neons so unfortunately all the space in my tank is filled. Hopefully I'll be able to get a new tank soon. This is so addictive. I could just picture my house in a copule of years, filled with a dozen tanks :D

Hi aquarius :)

It's too bad you don't have a car; I don't have one either.

But, I'm glad to learn that you got some gouramis. What kind are they? Be sure to check out the betta and gourami section of the forum. But, watch out for the bettas--they are REALLY addictive!!!! :hyper:

i have 3 cories - a bronze, an albino and a schwarzti (or something like that!). they play together happily. the bronze and albino are the same species of cory.

the gouramis are so cute  they're still babies. i'm wondering if they're honey gouramis but i'm not sure. they're pinkish/cream color with red tail and fins. sound familiar? i wish i could post a picture. yeah, i hear about those addictive battas, so i'll be careful
