DIY Small external

My 15g has a Fluval 2 (internal), but it takes up a lot of room and is awward with the rocks in there. So, I was wondering how I could go about making a small external. The tank is lightly stocked, but might go up to heavily stocked in a few months (moving fish from one tank to another, I might be able to spread them all around though). Any ideas on a cheap way of doing it?
