hey
i was wondering if it were possible to build your own filter?
i have just built a small pond approx 150gallons and am a bit short of money, :/ filters are very expensive and so would like to build my own UV filter if that is possible?

has anyone here got any ideas?
has anyone ever built there own UV filter?

thanks x x :good:

Any no hole pot about 5 gal. capacity will do. Put in a small submersiable pump, and fill with fine and then course filter material. You can terminate with a fountain head or just a straight pipe. Just place in in the pond and you are done. The UV filter is another matter. You are better off buying a comercial one, but then the simple filter idea will not work as UV's need to be installed into plumbing.

for an external filter any sealed container with a removeable top will do,a hole in the bottom as an inlet and outlet at the top fill with filter medium and attach a hose running from a small pump ,a 5 gallon home brew bin would be ideal, just make sure the pipes you fit as inlet/outlet are water tight

cool thanks! im going to try and make one this week! :good:
what sort of filter media would i use?

in your opinion are UV filters any good? what do they do exactly???? are they worth buying for a small 150 gallon pond thats going to hold a few goldfish??

thanks again! :good:

we bulit are own .....it was great untill its all just started breaking and leaking . there must of been about in inch left in the pond by morning ... she we bought one .... but our pond is 1000 gallons so it was a big filter anyway ..... it cost about the same to biuld one that to buy one .. but like i sed .. it was a big filter ..

Ultra-violet Clarifiers expose water to ultra-violet light that clumps algae particles together to make them large enough to be picked up by the pond filter. There is also some evidence that they are beneficial by keeping the pond water healthier for the pond fish.

Ultra-violet clarifiers are the only sure way to control the free floating pond algae that turns water green

hope it goes well :fish:
