Use only 100% pure tea tree oil to make Melafake, an inexpensive substitute for MelaFix.

To make it, mix 1/4 tsp. 100% pure tea tree oil with 8 TBS. dechlorinated water. Shake very well and use it as you would MelaFix. Shake well again before each use.

Pure tea tree oil is a very light, thin substance which will mix with water, if well shaken. When Melafake is added to water intended for use as part of a water change the force of the water coming out of the tap will further agitate it and mix it with the water. It will then mix with the tank water the same way MelaFix does.

would you be able to use concentrated tee tree oil, and what dosage do you use, drop/liter? also would it help fight parasites?

sorry for all the questions, just seems like a great alternate to meds.

Hi bob`_your_dog :)

The kind to use is 100% pure tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) which can be purchased at a health food store. I would not recommend using anything else.

If you follow my formula above, you will have made the equivalent of MelaFix and can follow their directions and use it at the rate of 1 tsp. per 10 gallons. To treat bacterial infections, they suggest adding this dose daily for 7 days, followed by a water change. Do not forget to remove any charcoal in your filter during treatment.

I have found that MelaFix is a mild antibacterial agent, that will work quickly if it works at all. If results are not seen within 2 or 3 days, don't waste any more time before doing a water change and using a more traditional medication.

I do not think this would effectively fight parasites.
