Some of you may remember my first attemp at a homemade external filter.

Now this worked but never served a purpose as I closed down the tank I was going to use it on. Plus the power head that was in it was far to noisy.

Well I'm setting up the 90l tank again and I ordered a new more powerfull power head

Only problem is the original container is now to small :-( so tonight I'm going to get one that's around twice the size and hopefully get it up and running again.

Yeah it worked the thread should be some where I'm in the process of making a bigger one just got to find the right container

Aye i found the thread Here

Really looking forward to following this new project.

Do you have a pic of the last filter, finished and running?

BUMP!! im somewhat of d.i.y enthusiast and id be interested to see how this turned out!! especially a finished picture with the powerhead and media inside the filter box as the step by step just shows you how u got to the picture above

very nice i am defiantly going to follow this :) sounds very interesting gd luck with finding a container, how large of a container are you looking for?

Tried using a Big tupperware cake box I got one its 12" square could do your idea but add some flow dividers for different medias?

i have made something very similar to this i got the tub from sainsurys for 3 quid 1.7ltr i think. i put 3 15mm tank connectors int the top (lid) 1 intake, 2 out, and 3 for the cable to the pump. origionally the cable was pushed through a hole and siliconed but i wasnt happy with the seal so i replaced the hole with a tank connector along with 2" of pipe. fed the cable through the pipe and filled the pipe with silicone. this gave a much higher surface area for a watertight seal.

I guess the only real difficulty's in this are stopping any leaks, and finding the right container to use?

I have a powerhead laying about that would be perfect for a job like this, just need to find a decent water tight container.

Keep us posted on your progress, looking into doing this on a bigger scale in the near future :good:

Cheers, Sean
