Hi all i thought id share this filter idea i had some years ago you can view a tutorial on how to make it at the you tube link below. I had the idea to make the filter from pop bottles. I use these in my guppy breeding tanks , my betta breeding tanks and my angel breeding tanks. They are very succesful and are ideal as they hold a decent amount of media and you can put in whatever media you want for chemical , mechanical or biological filtration. I normaly buy enough pipe to make around 10 at a time and they work out at round £1 each plus obvioulsy whatever media you wnat to add
here is the link

i made a smaller version of something like this a while back

made with a smaller water bottle, and powered with an aquaclear powerhead

I made a somewhat similar one. It uses a bigger container, but the powerhead is inside, so it's pretty compact.

The coarse gravel on the bottom is to give it some weight (mine sits on the bottom, and is held in place against the wall by one suction cup) as well as to keep the area around the powerhead from clogging. The inlet area is large enough that the suction isn't dangerous even to fish fry. There's a foam pad on the top too for mechanical filtration, although that doesn't show in my, er, artistic representation.
