DIY Caves

Actually, it won't say "safe for aquariums" in most cases.

A member of another board noticed that while Silicone II specifically says not to use it in aquariums, Silicone I does not say anything to that effect. He tried using Silicone I in his tanks- with no problems- so I started using it, too. :)

I really like the caves, they look tops. I can't see any mention of a I or II on the tube of silicone that I have. Is there anything else to look for or where should I be looking for the information?

GE is the company that makes Silicone I & II... I've never used any other brand of silicone. The tube of sealant should say "not for use in aquariums" if it is toxic to fish, but it will not necessarily say "safe to use in aquariums"... if that makes any sense -_-

Unless you buy your sealant at your lfs, or use GE Silicone I, I'd be hesitant to try other products. That's just me, though. GL

Thought I'd show you how I got on with my attempts. I found some old plastic plumbing pipe and joints. Rather than a perfect shape I attacked them with a heat gun to warp and distort them. Two coats of sand later and this is the result

Think they need another coat of sand. Top idea Cutechic

Very unique!

Did you use the heat gun on them before or after adding the sand?

Tip : if you get silicone on your hands rubbing alcohol will remove it -Anne

I love the idea it is a great idea for corys i will gice it a go later on.

Karlos,

Those caves are superb !!! :D Big Thumbs-up ;) Very novel way of using the pipes to create very individual caves :)
