Hi...I was wondering if anyone has made a DIY canister filter? I would love to give it a go,but would like some good input from anyone who has made one of pro's and cons of making one yourself, ive seen a few videos of ones doing it and seems a good job.

I have made sponge filters but not canister filters. I am, however, very interested in what others have to say on the matter. I've seen some YouTube videos as well, but I'm not sure how well they work. Maybe someone can shed some light for both of us.

There are a few vidoes around. There was one build on here from a food container and powerhead not all that long ago (may have been a few years ago actually).

The issues generally are getting it to seal in a way that you can actually open it again to clean it (which a lot of people get around by siting them level with the tank rather than underneath, and the cost of the materials such as pipework and the pump ending up near to a new external filter (which people get around by having old filter parts and pipework from dead filters lying around).

I looked long and hard at the concept for a while, and then made a sump.

Cheers DrRob...I think its always a bit of fun designing and playing with idea's of aquarium projects, and your right about the cost of it prob been the same as buying a external, alot of ones use pvc pipe,i might venture down that route, will price all the parts and then see how i can get the price down further, which i usually do when it come to doing projects, unfortunately i dont have any old filters lying about me but will think of something on how to get a few oldies :D
