I have a 55 galon freshwater tropical tank, Ive seen aquariums with the "wall of bubbles" around and I'd really like do something similar, but without buying the stupidly expensive bubble rock chunks.
I was thinking perhaps just poking a ton of holes in some silicon tubing burried under the gravel, with a small pump?
Has anyone tried this?

Thanks! :D

:hi: to the forum. Introduce yourself in the newbie section.

All I really wanted to tell you was the above statement. :/

I'm not sure if your plan'll work. Good luck.

There are bubble wands that are cheap and aren't the rock things. I think they go as long as 26" and might be cheaper than DIY. You could get some tubing and poke holes in it but I'm not sure how well it would work.

It might be worth a shot... Just remember that you can make holes bigger, but not smaller. The holes in the bubble thingies all seem to be tiny so I'd start with something not much bigger than pin pricks.

If you have some spare air tubing around, that might even work.

Also, while building it, you might consider the fact that airline tubing doesn't really have significant weight, so if you don't add weights, it might tend to rise and/or float.

With regard to air pumps and tubing, where can I find the little suction cups to attach the tubing to the glass in the tank? I have not seen in any pet stores, so many Lowe's or Home Depot or another hardware store?

Thanks.

what are you planning on useing for your wall of bubble? Plastic, rubber?
rubber like tubing is near impossible to use, tiny holes will tend not to work. hard plastic may work, but if you ask me i'd go the bubble wand

tried and failed it doesn't work. buy a really long air stone it looks better anyways. i don't us air stones or a pump i feel that the illution of it actualy arinating the water a bad thing if you wanna put O2 in the water then use a powerhead or ur filter.

Just to back up what Teelie said:

Bubble Wand

Only US$8.- Apparently you can add more wands together to double the length.

The only DIY plans for airstones I found on kingvinnie.com were designed for protein skimmers for saltwater tanks and were made out of wood: DIY Air Diffuser. Not exactly what you are looking for, but it might give you some ideas.

The one I got at Wal-Mart yesterday was 14" and only $3.97.

That's where I got mine. Fairly cheap and easy to assemble. The one sinistral linked to is the 23" model which is why it's more expensive.

I have a Hagen Air Curtain in my tank that is 35" long (its actually more like 40"!!) you can get them up to 48". It only cost me £12 and it looks like this:

you can get them here in the US, or here in the UK.

P.S Excuse the broken back behind my DVD player, I had to do it to fit the DVD in. I'm gonna fix it this weekend!!!!
