after i lost my first batch of ram fry i decided to set up a holding tank as cheap as possible due to xmas looming.

so this is what i did
i bought a plastic 20 litre tank from wilkinsons
i then bought a water but pipe that screws into down pipes to collect the water
firstly i drilled the tank to fit the water but hose this will serve as the outlet
i sat the tank on top of my main fish tank with the hose from the plastictank going into the main tank
i then removed my fluval outlet pipe from the main tank into the smaller tank and that nows flows into the smaller tank and returns into the main tank.
and the new batch are happy in there new home with all the benefits of the main tank filteration but with no fish trying to eat them. all this for under £10

Yep its a good system to use (and used a lot in marine tanks) similar to setting up a 'fuge or sump.

To be honest though I had never thought about using one for fry/growout tanks so it is a really good idea.

It might be a tad too much flow for gentle fry and eggs.

Clog the pipes a bit?

Maybe tie some filter wool to the input and output?

i have slowed the filter down to a very low outut and they seem to hold there own i also added some bog wood from the tank for shelter seems to be working just fine just ordered a brine shrimp achery so fingers crossed i can safe a few to grow on i love rams and just so happy they are breeding so readily.

Pic's would be nice! Great idea! My teacher does something like this. He has 3 55g blue barrel's( palstic). One with a plastic veiwing area drilled into it. The he put's Tilapia in there( to rasie and eat), then he connect's this tank with the other 2 barrel's with PVC Pipe. He takes some pvc and put's a air stone in it. It draws the water in to the other tank's( one in which he has alot of plastic polyfiber stuff, for bio-filtration), adn then that flow's into the other tnak, in which he has a piece of styrofoam that he put's plants in, so he can raise them, so then they add oxygen. So basically, he has really good waer!

Yeah I'm in need of a breeding tank for my tiger barbs, and this sounds like a great idea.
If you can get a picture or a blueprint of some sort up, it would be really helpful and inspiring.
