Diy 3D Backgrounds

I've been watching some videos on youtube about making 3d backgrounds and wondered if anyone had made one and had any tips or suffered any problems regarding water ph after.

Most of the videos suggest multiple water changes before adding fish, i thought maybe i could just soak it in the bath for a day before adding it to the tank.

The ones on youtube suggest polystyrene with cement over the top

i think that guide is on here somewhere, looks like a lot of work, i can hardly see the background in my tank now due to plants so not really worth the effort in my case.
