does distiled water work in fish tanks? why or why not .and is ro a better route than distilled?

  • 1 Common gold fish
    3 Red eye tetras
    3 Black skirt tertra
    1 sunset platy
1 male guppy(left over from breeding)

:p with the fish you have i would just use tap water and a water conditioner.
Distilled water is for id say the proffessional keeper of exotic fish

Neither distilled or RO water is appropriate in an unmodified form for aquarium use - it has to low a buffering potential and can swing wildly in pH. Both can be and are used, but stabilising salts are required.

Unless you know what you are doing, trying to adjust your pH is a very dangerous passtime - and as has been pointed out, with your stock - you really don't need to.

Thaks guys i keep that in mind does the water conditioner work instantly when it is added to water straight out of the tap?

water conditioner works instantly and you can probably get it from wal mart. if they have fish there(which was total news to me), why not fish supplies

I have used distilled water when I was out of aged, conditioned water with no problems. The only person I know who uses R.O. is a friend with several marine (saltwater) tanks.
