I bought a Betta 2 days ago from my LFS and have jut noticed its top fin has sort of eroded away and looks really straggly. I'm pretty sure its fin rot, and none of my other fish are infected. To be honest, the fish looks in a bad way. I'm Just wondering if I should tell the shop I bought him from about this? He was pretty expensive and I'll be devastated to lose him and have no idea whether its my problem, or the lfs have any liability? Is it worth asking for a replacement? Any info would be great, thanks!

lol I think you should be more concerned about getting him healthy than holding the LFS liable, but there we are

If he has finrot I recommend melafix and frequent (even daily) large water changes to keep the water squeaky clean

Thanks for the reply. Of course I am concerned about him, he's number 1 priority! He's being treated in a hospital tank now. Perhaps I should have explained myself a little better :/ What i am worried about is it infecting my other fish. I have newly hatched cockatoo cichlids and dont want an outbreak of anything!! I am very upset for the fish that is infected and I'm doing everything I can to save him. But I am concerned that he was ill when purchased and may infect my other fish as a result. Should this be mentioned to the shop or am i liable for any damage caused once they gave him to me? I've never had a problem with a fish that i've just bought so wondered how to go about dealing with it in case something worse happens?

My belief is that finrot isn't contagious to other, healthy fish. It's something that sets in due to previous fin damage. It can be prevented with clean water but with him being at the LFS and the stress of moving to a new home he was at a disadvantage. So, if he's in a hospital tank I wouldn't worry. Melafix and perfect water will sort him out. Once the fuzziness disappears keep up with the frequent water changes until his fins are healthy again. :good:

I dont think i have much time, he's now laid on the floor and gasping! This is very sudden and I looked at him before I left the house at about 12pm and he seemed ok, besides the fin damage i assume, which i managed to not notice! But he was behaving fine. I have no idea whats going on. I thought diseases take a while to get to this stage? He didnt seem stressed by the move and was eating.....very strange. I've done liquid tests for everything so the water quality isnt the issue. Do you have any ideas? Thanks!
