Get a hardness test kit from Amazon.com. It costs less than six bucks and it is really easy to use. I would also advise getting a master test kit or (at the very least) some test strips so you can keep track of pH, nitrates and nitrites, and ammonia. Any of those, or a combination, could be causing your problems. Let us know some specifics and we can probably help you and your fish out.
