This is your opportunity to give your say on the first of the livebearer sections new interactive discussions! Please remember that while differances in opinions are appreciated - the discussion should always remain friendly.

We want you to give us your opinion on is whether it is fair to interbreed one family of livebearer for more than one generation. For example to breed one guppy to another , and one of the female fry to one of the male fry , and one of their female fry to one of their male fry and so on. There are many different
prospective problems resulting from this , from physical to habitual and tempermental problems. For example in a letter to one of his associates , John A. Endler < see the name > quotes that he was dissapointed "to see how much of the original
color pattern variation has been lost through inbreeding "
on the subject of Endlers. This shows just how much a problem inbreeding can be. Such fish can be deformed , ugly and show aggressive tempermants. However many keepers of livebearers proudly make a line of their guppys or platys etc. going down several generations. It is a great feeling to have a family of livebearer spanning all the way down four or so generations.

So with these pros and cons to inbreeding livebearers - We wants to know , What do YOU think?

I dont think its to fair really, due to the fact of deformaty and also family issues lol
Back to the point H3... With interbredding going on, my personal oppinion is that it loses its character due to the fact there all from the same family and also like what "furryrabbit" said it can cause more problems than you think...
I have 1 generation of Guppies who have had Fry and noway will I let them interbreed due to the colours...and also because it can't be healthy

i was thinking also , do you think it is possible that inbred livebearers can have mental issues? ive seen some pretty weird behaviour in my platys , who are at least second generation. two of them are complete loners , maybe they are retarded?

Possible yeah, Well I think so anyhow!!!
On of my M8's has Platies and Has interbreed for a while!!! And there fish are just weird...abnormalisum/loners/weird acting and some even looking weird 2

are u allowed to do this? sometimes it just causes problems as they got rid of the general chat... anyway I want to have line of several generations of platys but i plan on introducing 1 or 2 new platys to the line to stop inbreeding. most fish u buy are all ready inbreed unless u got ti from a private breeder. doing it further cause many problems and theya re more prone to illness. as being retarded? i think it is impossible because the brains are so small. maybe without some instinct? thats a little more likely.

more than allowed , specifically requested. scroll down to see annastasias post asking for volunteers - and you shall be enlightened! < and its on the subject of livebearers so not reaslly general > :good:
also, i know their brains are small , that does not in my opinion rule out mental handicap within fish. i think even if it does not affect a fishs' attitude - it messes with their instincts and behaviour . i also tried adding new platies - they werent really received all that well , the male seemed interested mostly in the females he had grown up with. i agree though , it is nice to be able to i have a family line of fish going back x generations

oh ok my bad. i was just stating about how things like these can go out of control. I think if u inbreed then introduce some new fish u can help it out a little bit if it is an accident. but if u intentionally inbreed and sell them i believe that is wrong.

lol actually it can if the brains are so small. its hard to know if fish really can think of an action, therefore they cant really be retarded. maybe missing genes, or dna, or instinct. but the only species i know that can be reatrded are primates. correct me if im wrong please.

im not sure on that one - i guess its near impossible to know. than again you wonder if your store buys from the same breeder only , could you be buying an already thoroughly inbred stock? so if you buy a new platy , guppy or molly to add to your line , could you just be adding in a second cousin or something?

I think it's nearly impossible to NOT inbreed unless you get your fish from a breeder (but sometimes even then). As was mentioned earlier, most fish that you purchase at the store are already inbred. The only thing you can do is try to not further the inbreeding by purchasing your fish from different places and not inbreeding them yourself.

I agree that the fish can't really be retarded per se, though they can lack some DNA and their behaviour and instinct would be effected.

so do you think it would be morally wrong if say , you buy five platies from the same shop < same source , probably inbred > and leave them to it? they would hence , be further inbred. this is what the majority of us do , is it not - so are we all guilty of doing wrong by this? personally - i think its completely inevitable - and a good method to help prevent this is buying from differant stores.

yes, but it isnt if u are ignorant. if u intentionally do it , then its wrong. i try buying the most differnt looking platys so i dont inbreed

I'm going to be keeping a close eye on these, and I will not hesitate to hand out warnings should people get out of control. So watch yourselves.

Threatening done. :D I'll pin this topic so it's easy to find. Good job, and thanks, FR!
