Discus Tank Mates?

Hi shaz-killie :)

One of the fish often found in discus tanks is the C. sterbai:

These corydoras are unusual in that they thrive in the warm water discus require and are completely peaceful.

thanks was looking at getting some cory to keep the bottom active, ordered 2 red and white discus from plymouth discus. never mail ordered fish before but thought i'd give it a try and should be here thursday to hopefully bring calm to the situation.

Kribs and rams are getting on great with the discus and complimenting them well. was also thinking of Agassiz' Dwarf Cichlid but then they seem to be similar to the kribs and might fight, not sure

Plymouth Discus have a good rep, so you shouldn't have an issue there :good:

I'm also not shure on the likelyhood of the Dwafs getting on with the Kribs. A lot will depend on tank size and decor I would think ;)

As Inchworm says, those corries are great for Discus tanks, and I'm thinking about a few for mine ATM (10 to be exact)

All the best

well just bought those corries as they were advertised on the site so thought I might as well snap them up. think i'll stick to kribs, rams and rummy now for other fish.

and yeah plymouth seemed like good customer service, got a call a few hours later so fish should arrive thurs morning. haha I feel like a kid at xmas as I just want this mess sorted. also picking up more kribs on sun so that should complete there stock

1st post so thought i would give it a go!

Due to my Geophagus iporangensis having fry, i have had to do a major fish shuffle. I have moved my 7 discus into a tank with 1x Polypterus, 2X Cory, 1X Bristle nose and a Japenese Upside Down Cat.

Seem absolutely fine and are actually more adventerous than in the 4foot tank that has now been segregated into 3 for a breeding tank.

Good luck, Discus rock but are hard work!!

thanks for the comments. at the mo I have only two low priced discus to ensure i could keep them. here's a couple of pics, i'll start a proper thread for my tank once the other two red discus arrive tomorrow

and the other who is the bully

yeah I like them, got there own little characters. hopefully these two will arrive with no issue tomorrow

Still juvi's by the look of things

The reason they are cheap by the look of things is because they are starting to stunt. They should still pull round and look like great fish after they have been under good care though :good: Try for Daily Waterchanges of 50% and a minimum of 5 feeds a day and they should come up well :good:

All the best

thanks for the advice will do, sounds bad for saying they were the guinea pigs as I got the two for £50 and didn't want to spend a fortune to find them floating.

oh what should I use for there diet, was looking to have about 3 options that i could give

Anything and everything, just so long as it is varied ;) The more protien you give them though, the quicker the growth rate and the better the shape will recover :good:

All the best

well quick update the 2 red discus have arrived and starting to gain there colour however one doesn't look too health hopefully from the delivery but has a sunken area just above it's stomach. hopefully this will fix itself after a few feeds.

also bought a load of frozen food

Bloodworm , Brineshrimp , Cyclops, Mysis , Tubifex , Krill would this be ok as a diet along with pellets?

Should be fine IMO :good: Try to split is 50-50 between the pellets and your frozen stuff. If you can, mix some veg like peas in as and when they are cooked for the family.

thanks i can see a massive difference in the larger discus already which is the last of the pics as he's alot more blue and trailors(not sure what they are called on discus) are nearly orange. not sure if this is to do with his living conditions or introduction of the other two discus
