Hi everyone.

Does anyone know what age / size is best for discus breeding? I've got a jewel 190 with a 6' , a 4.5' , and a 2'.

In the past i've found the smaller ones hard to keep, whilst the larger ones appear to be hardier.

I'm thinking about trying to breed in the future ,but how many fish (and what size) would I require to give it a go? and would it be ideal for size of tank? I couldnt tell you what volume a jewel 190 holds.

help!

Hi Craw

It is best to breed discus, after there are at least 1 year old. It is hard to tell by size how old a discus is by size, unless you have had it from a very small size.

As for the best size of tank for breeding them. A 20 gall tank is the size you should be looking at.

You say that it is hard to keep discus. I have to disagree with this. Keeping discus is no harder that any other fish, if not easier than others. Water quality has to be kept at the best you can get, then there is no problem. Younger discuses need medium hard water to do best, with a pH of 7. If you try keeping them in soft acidic water, they will not do very well.

Breeding discus is not easy, but well worth doing.
