I have a 190 liter/50 gallon tank, it is quite densly planted and is decorated with a small natural stone cave and bogwood. I have 10 years of fish keeping experience and I really want to give discus a go. My tank currently contains-

2 cory's
1 leopard plec
1 kissing gourami

I know some of these may have to go, which?

What companions could I get for Discus?

Any other info welcome? :D

Thankyou

Oh, can discus happily survive at 27 degress celcius, that is what my lfs keep them at in a large display tank, which contains-

20 pleco varieties
2 pictus cats
Angels
Guppies
Neons
Cardinals
BGK
Golden barbs

:) Thanks

You plan sound good to me. There are many catfish, tetras, and other community fish that can work. I would just start off with Discus and see how things go before filling the tank up with other fish, but that is just me.

And while 27 is warmer then I like to keep my tanks, it will work fine.

would i be able to keep the current occupants or would they hav to go

The Gourami would have to go, the others would probably be just fine.

When searching for tankmates, go with unaggressive types (not gouramis, mollies, other cichlids, or barbs.)

The kisser has to go!! Definitlely, I was just watching one suck the side of an angel in my LFS today.

Cories are from cooler water from the most part and a cory breeder I know says that they dislike the tall tanks that Discus prefer as they make frequent trips to the surface and the deeper the water, the more foul it becomes at the bottom.

CA has a good point about keeping to Discus only for starting out purposes, it will make life MUCH easier! It is by no means fully necessary but you may lose some Discus and you really do need a QT tank to sort out the other fish. Medicating a tank with otherwise healthy Discus is a nightmare.

what is the lowest temp. my tank could be kept at and is 15"(of water) tall enough?

Discus begin to feel uncomfortable below 28C, not sure what that is in F, Celcius is my reference point, being from Ireland.
I dont think 15" will be deep enough in the long run.

so unfortunatly, discus are out of the question then :(  :( :-( :-( :-( :-( . So i suppose 15 inches is to small for angels to :-( :-( . My tank has an amozonain theme but at the moment the are only smallish fish darting around and I really want centre piece for my tank, I am so sad that Angels and Discus are out of the question :-( . Can you suggest any other amazonian mid water dwellers that are quite large and would go in my tank? :/ :/

First of all, a little patience will go a long way. This is a forum, not a chat room - it takes time to get responses. The longer you wait, the more responses you will get, and the more opinions you will hear.

Second of all, Kissing gouramis get pretty darn big, certainly enough to fill a 50 gallon. What's wrong with that?

I know i am sorry about that :-(

my tank as I said is amazionain themed so the kissing gourami dosen't really belong and so will soon be moved to a gourami tank so i will no longer hav a centre piece, is 15" tall enough for angels

thankyou so much for your help guys, i reall y apprecaite it.

between everyone on here, we know nearly everything and everyone is willing to help someone else :)
