I bought 20 neon tetras 2 days ago (April 10th) and put them in my 90 gallon planted tank. The next day there were only 18 and today I checked and there were 14 living and 1 dead. So in 2 days I've had 6 fish disappear and only found one body. The other fish in the tank are 8 Pristella Tetras, 4 Oto. Catfish, and 2 S.A. Bumblebee Catfish (Microglanis iheringi). I did see my Pristellas nipping the neon's fins but other than that I have no idea where my neons went! Any ideas?
Thanks

Neons are incredibly finicky, especially when in a new tank. Most likely they are dying off. What are the stats on the tank? Ammonia, etc? Neons can be very sensitive to water quality also.
Okay, a quick Google search tells me that your catfish is most likely snatching them up at night. Can anyone confirm this?

Nitrites and ammonia are  0 and the nitrates are at 8. Temp. is 78 degrees.
The Bumblebees are to small (for now) to eat neons.

Hmmmm. Other then just general casualties, I'm not sure. When we introduced 20 neons into our heavily planted established tank, we lost eight of them. No real reason, just neons being neons. I would just give it a day or two and see if they keep disappearing.

I would say your neon's are inside the bumble bee cats, they may be small but they have wide mouths.

I agree with star4. It is definitely a possibilty that the bumble bee cats had a snack. And if not, is there any chance they could have jumped out? They darn good jumpers when they want to be.

Well... 4 more disappeared. I think I know what's happening though. The Pristellas are killing and picking the neons apart and my catfish are cleaning up the leftovers. I found a chunk of fish intestine hanging on a piece of driftwood, so it can't be just the catfish eating them because catfish generally eat fish whole. The weird thing is, it seems that all the neons that disappeard were the ones that had nipped fins to start with, the ones that are left are all in perfect health.

Got a quarantine tank for the Neons? A ~60x30x30cm food grade plastic tub is fine as a QT for a few weeks with small new fish, not only to check for disease, but also to ensure they adapt to your fishkeeping as regards food and any water chemistry changes compared to the store.

It would not be as good as QTing, but you could try netting everyone out except the Neons, do a major rescape of the the tank and then re-introduce the X-Rays and Microglanis catfish.

78F (25.5C) might be considered a fraction warm for Neons, that tend to be swapped for Cardinal Tetras in warmer setups.

How hard is your tank water? X-Ray Tetras are one of the relatively few South American tetras I could consider in my gH 13/14 water (just like Red Eye and Lemon), but I would not go anywhere near Neons with my moderately hard water.
