Disadvantages Of Having A Bare Bottom Aquarium?

The only real disadvantages are that it can be unsightly and can make certain species uncomfortable (bottom feeders, naturally skittish species like Piranha or Silver Dollars), Personally I would paint the base of the tank black or similar to reduce the light refelction which may stress the fish out somewhat,

well i have mollies so i think i really dont need the bottom to be filled. right?

it will be fine without substrate and the fish will enjoy a much cleaner tank as you will be able to get all the crap out :good:

Thanks so i have come to a conclusion now.

My fry tank is very basic with a plant no substrate and hundreds of growing fry, they don't seem bothered.

even i am planning on having fries
do you want a big mac with those fries......
I'll bet those mollies will think of the new fry as french fries if they can get them  ... more my part my guess would be that sam9953 is probably much better with english as a second language than I would be with his whatever his primary language is as -my- second language, but that's just a wild guess...

i have to totally agree with you WD, being English most are lazy, me included when it comes to other languages as everyone else learns our lingo. i could possibly real off a few French sentences from my school days but thats about it im affraid  shame on us English speaking people......

Guys just call me Sam and i am very much comfortable with English even though its my second language.

Yes, you're doing great!

I am so thankful to you and all the members of this forum who have welcomed me warmly and have been helping me with my doubts and have cleared them all as i am a novice here.

Do you have any other tanks besides the 15 gallon with the 3 mollies? If not, is this your first tank ever?

Well sir i am just a 14 year old and i have had this tank since i as 6 but i never knew much about breeding fishes and all so this is my second time i am trying to breed them and the first time i was not successful. i dont have any other tank except this but i am planning to buy a 5 gallon tank maybe in march.

Sounds like you've been a fishkeeper for 8 years then, which is pretty good! Hopefully we will get you connected up with one or two other members who know how to breed mollies and you'll be able to find some new information that will help you.

As I mentioned before, Oldman47 is one of the livebearer people I'm aware of and he's pretty knowledgeable about mollies. One of the things I learned from him is that very often its the mineral content (the water parameter we measure as "hardness of the water") that is the thing that is significant for mollies and not necessarily salt, even though many people think its salt. I have no idea whether it might be hardness or salt or temperature or lighting patterns that molly breeders might use as a trigger, or nothing, for that matter! I've had molly fry years ago when I was younger but the fish just had babies, it was not that I did anything to help trigger it.

I was about to point you to the common livebearers subforum but now I see that you've already got several threads going over there so good, you are off and running on finding new information. Best of luck with it.
