I have a constant supply of live food for my bettas in the summer thanks to the standing bodies of water that are the outdoor dog water bowl and the bird bath, which are perpetually filled with mosquito larvae. Today I gathered some larvae for the growout tanks, but there was no way I could get them all and I sure didn't want them turning into adult mosquitos... so I netted a few fry and let them dine out! They were like kids in a candy store, it was too funny

I think it will probably get too hot for them in those containers without shade so I'll net them out and pop them back into the growout tank tomorrow morning, but it was just too funny watching them nab live food left and right

Too cute, you're babies are finally big enough to be taken out in public!
Pics, pics, pics!!!!

hmmm just how hardy are bettas really? I have a two level pond and I keep koi in the bottom but the top is too small. Spose I could keep a betta up there? Of course only for the summer. The mosquito larva gets out of control in the upper part, I am constantly out there scooping now that we have a mortal fear of mosquitos here :*)

edit- if this is a super dumb qestion feel free to let me know. I havent kept any Bettas in over six years now.

lol you should get some of my duckweed.

It helps reduce mosquito's in ponds...

A major benefit of using duckweeds is emerging. There is accumulating evidence that duckweeds release compounds that have insecticidal properties particular to the larval stages of mosquitoes. Thus the development of duckweed aquaculture in the wet tropics may have implications for mosquito control in rural areas where malaria is again becoming a serious problem.

Awwww, field trip!!! :D
That is soooo cute! :p

BTW, I thought I had posted in this topic already...... :dunno:

I left them in another day because it was overcast and not very hot today... they seem to be enjoying themselves :D. A few more babies got put in the birdbath because apparently 5 weren't enough to do the job... it was still FULL of larvae.

The dog water bowl (don't worry, it's just algae. The water itself is actually surprisingly clean)

Birdbath... bettas are in the second tier. We can't put water in the bottom tier because it's too deep and we've had birds drown in it (way to go, birdbath designer,) and water evaporates out of the top one too quickly.
