Hi I bought a digital thermometer for the tank today with an alarm on for if the water goes hot or cold

I'm just a bit confused about in/out temperatures, my heater is set at 26, But the thermometer says IN (inside the tank??) 28.2 and out (room temperature??) 26.1, or is it the other way around cause it would make a lot more sense if it was 26.1 IN the tank :S

Also what should I set the alarm to, min and max temps before it should sound

thanks :p

It sounds like you might have the Lifeguard Big Digital Thermometer??

I wonder if your thermometer was incorrectly calibrated. Do you have a standard one to check it against. Or, maybe your heater is off by a few degrees. My heater is off by 5°F when reading its display compared to a thermometer that I know is true. No big deal since it turns on and off when it should even though I had to adjust its setting. :)

I would think that would depend on the type of fish you keep probably keeping in mind you wouldn't want the range to be too great. :fish:

So, I went out and bought a floating thermometer too see which is correct, my digital thermometer or heater.

I had turned the heater down last night to 23 but my digital thermometer now says 28.4, its gone up! lol but the "out" says 23.5, which is about right (again) but out is the temperature outside the tank right?

anyway my floating thermometer is saying just over 25.. about 25.2 so that's no help either!

I have two of those thermometers they seem accurate and always agree with each other. The heaters are a lot less accurate, one heater I have is out by 3 degrees. Yeah “inâ€￾ is the tank temp “outâ€￾ the room temp. I would suspect the heater but it could be the thermometer too. I tested my digital thermometers with a home medical thermometer and they agreed with it. That doesnt clear much up for you I'm afraid

I recently bought one of these thermometer's too - took 24 hours or so for it to settle for some reason (ended up with 3 different ones in the tank for a while!).

Just check that you haven't pressed the max temp button by mistake as it stays on...reason I say this is that I came home the other day to find the tank reading at 16.5 degrees (yes, I freaked, grabbed every other thermometer that I could, hand in tank to check temp etc etc), before I noticed that I must of pressed the min temp button at some point earlier - gave myself quite a fright.

No idea why but the min temp is still set to 16.5 degrees, and the max temp at 31.3 - can't adjust it either (I'd definitely want the alarm to go off well before those temps)...so, I've been bought a Marina Aqua Minder for Christmas same as in my other tank.
