It might be worth looking our for a second hand Canon 1000d too, it has a lot of similar features as found on the 400d and 450d....but is a cheaper range of camera (still comes with a kit lens that has IS though). It is the entry-level DSLR from Canon and is relatively new on the market.
I think you can pick these up new for under £400 brand new, so secondhand they may prove to be a bargain. Comprehensive review of one here: http

I've not looked on eBay but you may find a bargain or two, as I would expect a lot of people who get one may well upgrade to a better body after a year or 2...
