Difference in sand?

smithrc, i think you calculations are a bit wrong.
if the 1000 is 30 (us) gallons that makes it about 25 (uk) gallons, and i have the deep version of it (only 5cm deeper) which is 40 (uk) gallons.

hold up - that means more fish....

Doh - its the 800... not the 1000.

Not all play sand is the same. Some is very fine, and some is more coarse. If very fine you will wash away alot of it. And the saving you thought you got whent down the drain. I have one tank with play sand and befor I got done I washed out over half the sand down the sink. IMO The best is sand blasting sand coarse grade. I got enought to do my 55g for $6 at a small home improvement store.

If you have gravel now and want to switch here is a good way to do it.
