Help fast! I just bought 10 guppies (5 male 5 female) from the LFS. I set up a new aquarium (1.17 gal) and supplied it with a submergable filter, and a large plant to provide cover for the babies. I have thus far lost 6 of my adult fish, yet there are babies in my small tank. I intended on using this tank to breed Guppies for my oscars. :hyper: The water I am using in my new tank has allready been cylcled as it is from my established 33 gal tank. What do I do to stop the death in my small tank. The water isn't heated as the LFS told me you don't need a heater for guppies. Theire is a plentiful supply of oxygen, what do i do?!?!?!?!?!??!

I have now noticed that when i attempt to feed the guppies/fry they don't eat the flakes, even if they are crushed or not! I just got the fish less than 20 hrs ago, so the fact that they haven't eaten shouldn't be the cause of death. I also just put a dose of nutrafin cycle in my 1.17 gal (where the guppies and fry are)

SOME ONE PLEASE HELP ME DONT JUST READ IT, REPLY TO IT TOO, I NEED HELP FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- the tank is far too small even for one guppy
- they would be much happier in a heated tank
- you have not cycled the tank! adding water from an established tank does nothign as the bacteria don't live in teh water! add some gravel from your established tank immediately. maybe a 1" deep layer or so. there will be bacteria on this. got water param readings?

Sorry, I know that sounded newbish of me. I did add some gravel from my other tank, as well as all the water and some filter media too, forgot to add that in. Anything else. My water test kit is currently at a friends house, get it back later today. The thing I don't understand is how the female had babies in my tank. If the conditions were so bad that some others died, then she would abort the pregnancy, you'd think. What should I do!

Keep the tank somewhere pretty warm in your house, I'd take the adults out and leave the fry in there for now since they aren't that big yet, I dunno where you should put it.... I'd get a ten gallon for a breeding tank, use the 1 gallon for really tiny fry, unless you just fill the ten gallon with plants really well. Trust me, I have mine in a thirty gallon for maybe four months now and I only have 4 fry total -_- Somtimes they are just sick when you buy them, I've had one drop her fry, then die a day later for no apparent reason.

Edited because I ate my fingers, and that makes it hard to type.

I agree with clutterydrawer, the tank is too small for 10 guppies and I would use a heater.

Anyway, IMO even if you have used gravel from your other cycled tank the baby tank will still go though a cycle of its own. When I did my small fry tank I used filter media from my main tank and added no fish. It went through cycling and the results were as here My cycle

I would get you test back straight away and check you parameters, you may find that is why your guppies are dying.

Let us know you parameters a.s.a.p. I think water changes will be needed :/

I do have a 33gal tank with Chiclids and Oscars. I could seperate my adult guppies using my pen plax breeding trap. Would the sudden change from no heater to a heated tank be shocking for them? I am noticing that the fry aren't eating as much as they should. Could this just be normal. The other guppies aren't eating much/at all either, perhaps they eat when i leave the room? any ideas?

if you are going to move them to a warm tank you need to acclimatise them in the same way as you do when bringing them home from the lfs. what are the temps of the two tanks?

The temperature difference isnt that great. The smaller tank is at around 78 and the larger at 82. I have been using my nearby halogen light as a heat souce for the 1.17 gal. I managed to get ahold of a small heater used for a 10 gal tank, and i have it on low power, so the temperature is going to be risen hopefully to 80 sometime tonight.

I also did a water change earlier today, before i had instaled the heater. I am trying to watch the heater very carefully since it is obviously very powerful for a tank this size.

I put all my bigger guppies (5) in the pen plax breeding trap in the 33 gal. a few hours ago. I just lost another guppy. What aren't i doing/doing wrong?!?!!?!? HELP

someone actually reply, don't just read this!

Guppies are Dieing!
