I was cleaning out my tank sponge, but I heard that the bacteria live in the sponge. However, I have this bag thingy with tiny balls inside in my filter. Did my bacteria wash down the drain?

No, they secrete a glue to stick themselves to the surface they’re on.
You did use tank water to clean it?

I really hope that you cleaned the sponge with dechlorinated water?
